We suggest
that travellers from Britain take a ferry crossing either
to St. Malo (best!) or to Caen, or even Cherbourg in order
to minimise road travel when in France. All of these services
are available from Portsmouth.
Ferry
crossings to other ports provide different and usually longer
routes. We can give routings from them or from any other direction.

| St.
Malo to Le Grand Bost |
|
Mileage:
approx. 350 miles Time: approx. 5 - 7 hours
Follow
signs for Rennes on the N137 (fast dual carriageway). At Rennes
take the ring road, following signs for Nantes. (NOTE: you
want to continue on the N137 but the road number may change
whilst on these ring roads so don't be disturbed!). Keep on
the N137 all the way to Nantes (still a fast dual carriageway)
and then at Nantes, take the ring road again (western half)
until the exit for the A83 to Niort. This is a paying motorway
(the only one on your trip) but well worth it to speed up
this middle section. Follow the A83 to its end where it joins
the A10. Join the A10 heading towards Bordeaux until exiting
at Junction 37 (Mirambeau).
Take the
D730 all the way to La Roche Chalais. Turn right on the D674
up the hill into La Roche Chalais and in the market take a
left to rejoin the D730 (signed Montpon). After just over
2 miles fork left onto the D108 (signed Echourgnac) and continue
to the village of Servanches. At the angled crossroads go
straight on with the D108 and we are the first house on the
LEFT after leaving the village (about 1¾ miles).

Caen
to Le Grand Bost
Mileage:
approx. 400 miles Time: approx. 7 - 9 hours
Follow
signs from the ferry port at Ouistreham towards Caen, then
get on the ring road (westbound) signposted towards Rennes.
Take the N175 to Avranches (74 miles so far). This is currently
being updated to Autoroute and some sections are complete.
Soon after Avranches join the A84 and go to Rennes. Take the
ring road on the east side and pick up the N137 to Nantes.
From here you can pick up the directions given for the
St Malo above.
An alternative,
but more expensive route, is to go Caen-Alencon-Le Mans-Tours
and then autoroute to Poitiers... BUT although this looks
easier and quicker, (for the same parameters it is 40 miles
shorter but takes 1 hour longer!) at busy times there may
well be a lot of congestion on the top section as this is
a major truck route.
Cherbourg
Mileage:
approx. 415 miles Time: approx. 7 - 9 hours
Leave
Cherbourg and join the N13 to St Lo then the D999 for about
20 miles to join the A84 at junction 38 (Villedieu-les-Poêles)
then carry on to Avranches and then follow directions as
from Caen/St Malo above.
